Dedemocratization is effected by demodernization
Rise and spread of democracy was not a handwork of any politician. Rather democracy could take birth due to changes caused by changes in technology of production and resultant changes in economy. When feudalism was falling due to rise of trade, technology and industry politics had no other choice but to widen it's fold to accommodate more and more people and consequently democracy could happen. In the later part of history when politics took refuse to traditional sentiments of identity just to make itself resistant to democracy it adopted authoritarian style. Rise of democracy was detrimental to the interests of parochial elites who since could not avert the spread of democracy by any political philosophy tried to manipulate democracy by means of sentimental appeal. Such elites in place of economic reasoning advanced sentiments of identity crisis in name of nationalism and religion . That's why when democracy started spreading those who could succeed in establishing authoritarian politics sacrificed the path of economic prosperity just to save their authoritarian rule.
Someone may argue that this explanation is not explaining the cases of USSR and China. See , USSR and China took alternative ways and within themselves they were also not identical. Excess authoritative style led the demise of USSR and China had to permit a certain degree of economic freedom within her territory. And moreover Chinese politics have always remained under tension resulting a vast inequality which is incedently even more than that in the advance western countries.
As democracy is a consequence of technological changes and consequent economic changes if some political thought pleads to scuffle the progress of democracy it is bound to be counter productive and that politics has to pave the way for establishment of democracy. The only way to avert the spread of democracy in a country is the forced backward movement towards feudalism , i.e. demodernization which implies if some political power opts against democracy in modern times that power has to detechnologize and de modernize the society. Recent example is China which is witnessing internal contradictions among prosperity , modernization , technology and totalitarianism and democratic aspirations of masses and the rich.
